How Do
We Do It
The Hearst Castle is
an important site in the history of California and the country.
Nearly 1,000,000 people annually visit Hearst Castle to learn
more about William Randolph Hearst and gaze in wonder at the magnificence
of La Cuesta Encantada. Approximately twenty-five percent of the
visitors to Hearst Castle are from outside the United States and
nearly thirty-percent are repeat visitors. Historic Preservation,
the magazine of the National Trust for Historic Preservation,
describes the mansion at San Simeon as, "the treasure trove
of a genius American collector" and states that "many
of the objects that Hearst collected are indeed important works
of art."
The Hearst Castle Preservation Foundation works with the
staff of Hearst Castle to identify projects in need of HCPF support.
Currently there are four very important art conservation projects
totaling $520,000 which have been ear-marked for HCPF involvement.
Long-term restoration and conservation of the historic site require
funding into the millions of dollars. Recognizing the essential
need for an endowment to cope with the ever increasing demands
of Hearst Castle, the HCPF is committed to a $10 million endowment
campaign over the next five years to address the immediate and
future needs of this important piece of California and American
history.
